What Would Compel an Otherwise Sane Person, or Even a Medical Doctor, to Attend a Lecture at 6:30 A.M. on a Sunday?

Novel Interventions for Low Libido

Introduction

After five days of early morning and late afternoon lectures, with a ski break every day from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M., it was finally my turn to address the 2019 Winter Convention of the Nevada Osteopathic Medical Association.  Given the most coveted slot of the entire Congress, 6:30 A.M. on a Sunday, even I wouldn’t get out of bed to hear a discussion on hormone depletion and memory loss. Who in blazes would show up for such a talk at that hour? Moreover, of the, maybe, three that did attend, would I be able to speak over the din of the snoring surely to come from said audience?

After a long, long, maybe two-minute deliberation, the “ah-ha” moment of the week arrived.  It is the year of our Lord 2019.  News cycles come and go and come again.  Sports teams, damn I thought the Philadelphia Eagles would run the table and make it to the big game again, revert to the norm.  The health care crisis continues unabated.  The internet and streaming video places any movie or TV at your fingertips. However, what is the one topic, the one immovable interest that never changes?  What is the of primary concern for all of humanity from the age 12 or so though, if you’re lucky enough, your eighties and even your nineties?

Also, lest we forget our soul mates?  Working in a medical spa, I’m Mr. Cellophane, not actually there, as both the young, under thirty, and those a bit more mature discuss men’s and women’s most enduring issue.  I assure you, dear reader, the discussion on the distaff side is just as fierce, intense, and embarrassing as a locker room of teenage football stars.

If you’ve not gotten the memo by now, I will spell it out for you. Our issue is sex. S-E-X.  There, I said it.  Sex.  Sex sells sports fans.  More precisely in our “Sixty is the New Forty” generation, sexual desire, ability, and performance sell.  And, with that stroke of genius, I managed to fill the lecture hall at the Mont Bleu Resort in South Lake Tahoe at 6:30 A.M. on a cold winter Sunday morning to discover:

Novel Interventions for Low Libido

70% of women ages 30-60 suffer from low sexual desire due to hormonal disruptions and 40% of all women experience some sexual dysfunction in their lifetime. The middle-aged woman, 40-55, suffers the highest prevalence of decreased sexual desire. Unfortunately, only 1/3 of these suffering souls seek medical attention. (1)

Surprisingly, 14% of young men between the ages of 18 and 29, experience low libido.  In their 50s and 60s, 17 % of these poor souls suffer recurring desire issues.

Signs and Symptoms of Poor Libido

Viagra, the “little blue pill,” released in the late 1990s, ushered in a new era of sexual openness.  No longer was dysfunctional sexual performance or activity a “taboo” subject.  With a solution in hand, suddenly, every red-blooded American male suffered from this “disease,” “E.D.”  (A lament went out across the fruited plain denouncing the lack of a similar chemical substance for women.  )

The backlash grew to the point that Pfizer, Viagra’s manufacturer, switched gears, and began touting a much more “important” benefit. Like the teenage boys of the 70s and 80s who read Playboy Magazine for the “best” news articles and never looked at the pictures, the symptom of erectile dysfunction and its’ successful relief with Viagra transmuted into a warning sign of underlying cardiovascular disease.

Low libido manifests as fatigue, depression and or anxiety, personal embarrassment and low self-esteem, family life deterioration, memory loss, and diminished communication and satisfaction with one’s partner.

In that light, we explore the:

The Four Root Causes of Poor Libido

  1. Hormone Imbalance
  2. Nutritional Deficiencies
  3. Psychological/Emotional Difficulties
  4. Vaginal Atrophy
