Why Detoxify?

Because we live in a toxic world.  By age 10, a child born in the millennial year 2000 will be exposed to approximately 80,000 chemicals that did not exist in 1970.

In 1974, glyphosate, a new potent herbicide appeared that changed the face, in terms of toxicity, modern agriculture.  Those of us of a certain maturity remember well, via the magic of television advertising, the fate of side by side weeds growing through cracks in the driveway.  An off screen hand delivered a single spritz of glyphosate, and 24 hours later, voila, no more weeds.

Over the past twenty years, the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases has spiked dramatically.  Evidence indicates that glyphosate interferes with many metabolic processes in both plants and animals. Glyphosate residues have been detected in both. Glyphosate disrupts the endocrine system and the balance of gut bacteria, damages DNA and is a driver of mutations that lead to cancer.(1)

Of course, not everyone sees it this way.

“Glyphosate has one of the most extensive human health safety and environmental data packages of any pesticide that’s out there,” said a company spokesman. “It’s used in public parks, it’s used to protect schools. There’s been a great deal of study on Glyphosate, and we’re very proud of its performance.”(2)

The EPA considers glyphosate to have low toxicity when used at recommended doses.(2)

“Risk estimates for glyphosate were well below the level of concern,” said EPA spokesman Dale Kemery. The EPA classifies glyphosate as a Group E chemical, which means there is strong evidence that it does not cause cancer in humans.(3) 

Any more than a taking Vitamin A capsules takes the place of eating a whole carrot, glyphosate isn’t just glyphosate.It is a whole concoction of chemicals, most considered, non- functional or  “inert.”  Inert compounds include solvents, preservatives, surfactants and other substances added to pesticides.

These “inert” components turn out to be lethal to human cells. Embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells are particularly vulnerable.  One component, polyethoxylatedtallowamine, or POEA, is more deadly to human embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells than the herbicide itself.(4

Glyphosate is not the only offender.   BPA, fluoride, parabens, phthalates, PFOA, fiberglass, oxybenzone, BHA are but a few of those 80,000 chemicals that have made their way into our food and water supplies.

PCB’s contribute to brain impairment.  Triclosan, found in soap, toothpaste, and bath towels, leads to limb deformities.  Phthalates, contained in fragrances, directly attacks the thyroid.  Perfluorooctanoic acid is baked into non-stick cookware and microwave popcorn bags.  All of the above interferes with many metabolic processes in both plants and animals.(5)

Mercury, perchlorate and nitrates are chemically similar to iodine, the element necessary for T4 thyroid hormone production. When absorbed, these poisons are mistaken for iodine, leaving the body less real iodine to make thyroid hormone, leading to hypothyroidism. The cells of the thyroid gland (as well as other cells in your body) become inflamed and damaged to the extent that the immune system no longer recognizes them as “self”.  Antibodies to our own thyroid molecules are created, resulting in hypothyroid autoimmune disease, described by Dr. HakaruHashimoto in 1912, and known as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

Mercury is found in sushi, cosmetics, vaccines, pesticides, dental fillings, and even coal fired power plant residue. Perchlorate is present in fireworks, fertilizer and rocket fuel. Nitrates are used in fertilizer and processed or cured meats like hot dogs and bacon. Spinach and celery naturally contain nitrates.

External remedies include HEPA filters to clean the air. Water quality improves with water filters.  Consuming only organic, grass fed meats, fish with lower mercury levels (salmon versus tuna for instance), and avoiding processed and cured meats (or using nitrate-free cured products) reduces nitrate exposure.

Skin care products and dental amalgams can also lead to heavy toxic exposure.

The cumulative effect of a lifetime exposure to this cauldron of woes are unprecedented explosions in asthma, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, obesity, lipoprotein metabolism disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease, senile dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, multiple sclerosis, autism, and cancer.(6)

Our digestive, immune and neurological systems are the main targets.  Hair and skin products, as well as fragrances, among others, are a major contributor to this crisis.  The average adult uses nine cosmetic products, applying the equivalent of 126 to 170 synthetic chemicals, a day.  More than 10,000 synthetic chemicals are used in cosmetics and personal care items. (7)  Only 10 percent of these chemicals are ever tested. The rest have never been evaluated by any publicly accountable institution.

Advances in modern food technology allow us to eat “egg whites” from a carton (with a 10-week shelf life), peanut butter that is still “fresh” five years after manufacture, and fast food French Fries still “edible” after two weeks of exposure to the elements.

The low fat diet of the 1980’s (wrongly hailed) saviour of men’s hearts, led to the development of Frankenfoods, toxic mixtures filled with chemicals our body neither recognizes nor can digest.  Fat was replaced with high fructose corn syrup, and wheat was genetically altered so as to be indigestible by a large segment of the population.

A Note on Grains and Gluten

“Give us this day our daily bread.”   The first petition of the Lord’s Prayer, the universal plea for the necessary supports and comforts of life.  Why is this even a controversy?

Today’s crops are nothing like those harvested by our ancestors.  In search of a higher yield, modern agriculture has depreciated nutrient content, on average, 30%.

Modern crops don’t even look the same.   Once more than four feet tall, the type of wheat grown in 99 percent of fields around the world, has morphed into a stocky two-foot-tall plant with an unusually large seed-head.(8)

Bread, wheat’s end product, and other grain based products, barley and rye, among others, contain gluten, an indigestible protein, associated with a universal inflammatory response in the body.   Gluten consumption in vulnerable individuals leads to inflammation of the intestines, joints, thyroid, nervous system and other body tissues.

In small doses inflammation is necessary to ward off invaders and create healing. Chronic exposure to inflammation, however, injures the immune system, renders one unable to fight off infections or respond to the stresses of the life, and, if left unchecked, leads to tissue destruction from within, i.e “autoimmune” disease.

“My doctor tested me for gluten.  It’s normal.  Gluten free is a fad.   I was born with it.  Autoimmune disease has nothing to do with diet.”

And like most doctors my advice is, “Nu? Maybe you get a little sick from gluten, maybe not.  We’ll watch it. Call me if you get really sick, then we can try to fix it.”

Really?  Ignore the warning signs, sit on your hands when the stew is lukewarm and wait until a forest fire rages?   That attitudereminds me of Rod Serling of “The Twilight Zone” fame.

“You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension – a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into time-space-food (fad) continuum on the way to inflammatory damnation.”(9)

So, which is it? Bread, as per the food industry, the angel of mercy? Or bread, as per your local healer (faith or otherwise), the angel of death?

Confusing, no?  In the late 70’s and early 80’s, we doctors jumped on the low fat, no fat bandwagon.  Whole eggs, bad.  Coconut oil?  Order up that cardiac bypass as a side dish, Mabel.   I personally was present in a patient consultation with a prominent cardiologist who stood over the patient (who was in bed at our local hospital awaiting results from a cardiac catheterization), pointed a finger (down) at him and literally screamed:

“You keep eating like that, meaning eggs and butter toast, and you WILL DIE.” (His emphasis.)  How would you react?

Today, of course, eggs are in, coconut oil is golden and low fat pumpkin pie is on the endangered species list.

So, we start with detoxification? Isn’t this just another gimmick?

In a word, NO!

Constant exposure to toxic chemicals manipulates genetic expression, inducing (new) fat cells to form, while simultaneously increasing inflammation(10).   Your fat, rounded stomach, is not simply a dormant storage depot, but a dynamic and highly active, damaged metabolicorgan.(11)

Adipose cells fill with excess fat and toxins, but do not efficiently carry out “normal” functions of fat cells.  Instead, they erroneously suppresses adiponectin, an important hormone, leading directly to increased risk for type 2 diabetes.

PCBs, for example, damage insulin utilization and thyroid production, increasing diabetes and thyroid disease.  Trying to get fat and toxins out of damaged fat cells is no small challenge, yet it is vital to restore normal metabolism.(12)

Toxic chemical errors of metabolism, termed molecular mimicry, create abnormal, “foreign” proteins, that evolve when our body mistakenly incorporates similar but abnormal compounds into normal tissue.

Autoimmune, or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, is a prime example of molecular mimicry.  Gluten, present in wheat, rye, barley and various combinations of these grains, contains a highly inflammatory protein, gliadin.

Gliadin closely resembles normal thyroid hormone, setting in motion a case of “mistaken” identity.  The thyroid production sequence, in the course of normal metabolic activity, incorporates gliadin, creating abnormal thyroid (T3) hormone.

Eventually the body recognizes that it doesn’t have enough “real” thyroid substrate to perform its’ functions and hypothyroid symptoms ensue.(13)

HOW WE DO IT

Daily Regimen

Most detox dietary regimens recommend going “cold turkey” with foods known to create inflammatory issues.  The Clearfield Medical Group Detox/Cleanse Food Plan takes more gradual, gentler, approach.

Offending food groups, sugar, dairy, gluten, and legumes, are eliminated sequentially. Sugar is dispensed with on day one, diary day 2, gluten days 3 and 4, and legumes day 5 and 6.  We also recommend eliminating alcohol, processed and packaged foods, fried foods, hydrogenated oils, margarine, peanuts and peanut butter.

This stepwise approach allows time for healing without severe withdrawal symptoms. By day seven we are “eating clean.”

We supplement our food plan with the Clearfield Medical Group (CMG) Detox Functional Food Supplement and Detox Formula.

Our food supplement powder contains macronutrients, a multivitamin/mineral complex, high levels of antioxidants, herbal remedies to promote liver function and elimination, non-GMO and (non-genetically modified) pea protein, that is dairy, fructose, gluten, lactose and sugar free.  The vanilla-berry flavored powder mixes easily with water.

Incidentally, pea protein has blood pressure lowering properties identical to first line antihypertensive agents such as lisinopril and captopril (ACE inhibitors). It also positively impacts cholesterol levels by stimulating bile acid formation and excretion.

Liver detoxification takes place in 2 phases.  Phase I can be thought of as the processor of raw materials.  Phase II takes the raw processed materials and neutralizes them in the body.

What To Eat

Specifically what to eat is outlined below.  Make sure, when putting together a meal, you follow our “Chinese Restaurant Menu” outline.  Take one item from column A (protein), one from column B (complex carbohydrates) and one from column C (fats and oils).

Each day we will eliminate one offending food group until Day 7 when we will be “eating clean.” Day 1 eliminates sugar, Day 2 diary, Days 3 and 4, gluten, and Days 5 and 6 legumes. Hence there is dairy, gluten and legumes on day 1, gluten and legumes on day 2 until day 6 when all are eliminated.

General Guidelines

  1. Eat 5-6 meals per day. Do not skip meals.
  2. Review and choose low-glycemic foods (<50) (See glycemic index file)
  3. No fruit juices, white sugar, artificial sweeteners, diet sodas, dried fruits, dairy except for a limited amount of Greek Yogurt.
  4. Make a meal by choosing an item from each of our “Chinese Menu” columns, A (Protein), B (Complex), and C (Fats).
  5. Add flax seeds and plain, unsalted almonds
  6. Watery fruits, while better than candy bars, are high in natural sugars. Go easy on   anything that needs mopping up after you bite into it. (Bananas, melons, mangos).
  7. Be mindful of sugars in low fat, low calorie salad dressings.
  8. A food diary improves compliance by 29% according to the Harvard Medical School of Nutrition.
  9. Combine Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar or Bragg’s Liquid Amino’s with Lemon Juice as a dressing.

The Method to the Madness

Foods to Avoid

  • Sugar in all forms, including sucrose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, honey, and maple syrup. Natural low-impact sweeteners such as stevia & polyols (e.g., xylitol &erythritol) are allowed.
  • Artificial sweeteners (sucralose, maltodextrin, saccharin, aspartame, Sweet ‘n’ Low, Splenda, Equal)
  • Gluten-containing grains: avoid foods which contain wheat, oats, rye, spelt, kamut, bulgur, couscous, and barley. This includes pastas, bread, crackers, cereals, and other products made from these grains. Gluten-free whole grains such as brown rice, wild rice, millet, quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat are allowable during the detox program.
  • Dairy products including milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream
  • All alcohol and caffeine-containing beverages including coffee, tea and soda
  • Soy protein, including tofu and tempeh
  • Desserts (chocolate, candy, cakes, cookies)
  • Processed, packaged foods
  • Fried foods, hydrogenated oils, margarine
  • Peanuts/peanut butter (high allergen legumes)

Replace

After the 2 week introduction, we transition you to the weight loss phase (2) of the Clearfield Medical Group ‘s Ultimate Lifestyle Plan.  Phase 2 can last from 2-20 weeks.  We conclude with our maintenance program to lock in your gains and guide you into the future.

In Phase 2 we will slowly reintroduce potentially allergy causing or inflammatory foods.  These need to be done one at a time, waiting 2-3 days before reintroducing a second one.  For instance, if you have a reaction to peanuts, do not attempt to reintroduce dairy until the peanut reaction has past.

If you experience hives, itching, throat swelling, i.e. allergic symptoms to a food, these, unfortunately need to be avoided.

Start with just 3 or 4 nuts in the morning.  If you have no reaction, increase the amount to 6-8 at noon and, if no reaction, add 10 more at dinner.

If you do experience a reaction, we usually recommend waiting 2-4 months before trying that food again.  The major food allergens are dairy, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts, soy, eggs, and shellfish.(14)
