Dr. Clearfield focuses on holistic health through diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. He has been consulted in Wilkes-Barre, PA, when other physicians, including specialists at NYU and the University of Pennsylvania, were unable to provide answers.
A graduate of Des Moines University (formerly the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery) in 1978, he interned at Metropolitan Hospital in Philadelphia and completed residencies in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Family Medicine.In 1984, Dr. Clearfield pioneered one of the first individualized computer-generated diet programs (on an Apple IIc) and introduced the Medifast Protein Sparing ModifiedWeight Loss program at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital in Kingston, PA.
His curiosity and passion for holistic medicine led him to UCLA’s Medical Acupuncture Physicians training in 1990. He quickly became the second medical doctor in theWilkes-Barre-Scranton area to incorporate acupuncture into his practice. He was elected to the board of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture as EducationDirector in 1992. He also served as Secretary of the AAMA in 1994.
His 1992 treatise, “Celestial Stems – 5 Element Diet and Exercise Program,” which is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, was highly regarded in the complementary medicine community.
In 1994, Dr. Clearfield established the first combined functional and alternative medicine pain clinic at John Heinz Rehabilitation Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA, which offers comprehensive pain management through a multidisciplinary team. His 1995 article, “Form Follows Function: The Treatment of Musculoskeletal Head and Neck Disease,” remains the treatment model for shoulder and neck injury.
He chaired the 9th Annual Symposium of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture in Washington, D.C., in 1997, and became the fourth licensed osteopathic physician specializing in acupuncture in Pennsylvania.
